What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a hands-on approach that focuses on the musculoskeletal system and the relationship between muscles, joints and movement.

Through clinical assessment, manual techniques and, where appropriate, advice on exercise and everyday habits, treatment aims to relieve certain musculoskeletal symptoms and improve mobility.

Each care plan takes account of your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle and goals.

Osteopathy for adults

An osteopathy appointment can help assess and manage:

  • Back pain and lower back pain
  • Muscular neck pain and tension
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Stiffness and restricted movement
  • Musculoskeletal discomfort associated with work and everyday activities
  • Some minor sports injuries and overuse-related problems

Treatment recommendations depend on the assessment findings and whether osteopathic care is appropriate for you. Where necessary, further medical assessment or care from another healthcare professional may be recommended.

Osteopathy for children

Our service includes osteopathy appointments for children, with assessments adapted to their age, medical history and reason for attending.

The appointment provides an opportunity for a parent or guardian to discuss concerns about movement or musculoskeletal discomfort and explore whether osteopathic care is appropriate.

Any proposed treatment is explained and agreed with the parent or guardian, taking the child’s needs into account. Osteopathic assessment does not replace paediatric appointments or necessary medical care.

What happens during an appointment?

Initial appointment
Your first appointment includes a discussion of your symptoms, medical history and daily activities, followed by an assessment of your movement and musculoskeletal system.

The osteopath explains the findings and available options. Where appropriate, and with consent from the patient or parent or guardian, the appointment may include manual treatment and practical advice to follow at home.

Follow-up appointment
Follow-up appointments review changes in your symptoms, assess your response to treatment and adapt your care plan as needed.

The number and frequency of appointments are agreed individually.
